Create your OWN ideal hunting camp in prime Elk Country! Your future retreat is located in the heart of the Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range at the eastern edge of the San Luis Valley in Costilla County, Colorado. This property is in the Sangre de Cristo Ranches (S.D.C.R.) and virtually surrounded by the Rockies for the ultimate in privacy and seclusion!
The Sangre de Cristo Ranches were developed, by Malcolm Forbes (founder of Forbes magazine), in the heart of the Sangre de Cristo Mountain range. Mt. Blanca towers at over 14,000 feet, highlighting the views from many properties in the area. To the west, the San Luis Valley is a fertile High Plains Desert, roughly 7,500 feet above sea level. The landscape within 44,000-acre Ranches varies from sagebrush and Pinon at the lower elevations, and Aspen and various tall pine varieties above 9,000 ft.
Each ranch is five acres or larger in size and fronts on a county road. Costilla County maintains all roads except for three wilderness-type roads that require four-wheel drive vehicles and service 14 ranches, which are only available for sale on site. Each Ranch has been designed to take advantage of terrain, views and use has been platted, surveyed and staked. All plats have been recorded with Costilla County. You can drive the gently curving roads by conventional automobiles except for the three wildness type private roads.
Note that pictures shown are representative of the area, but are not all the actual property. Map images show the actual property location and orientation.
The Sangre de Cristo Mountains get their name from the red color often seen on them at sunset. The Valley is ringed to the north by the La Garita Mountains and the west by the peaks of the San Juans. The Valley is a part of the upper Rio Grande Valley often referred to in literature as the Rio Bravo. It is basically agricultural land with a great variety of crops grown on the many acres of irrigated land where livestock forage. Just imagine yourself looking out from your cabin’s deck at breathtaking views of cattle, sheep and wildlife grazing among the native grasses of the valley, hills and mountains!!
Abundant recreational opportunities are available. The property is near the over 5,000 acres of greenbelt that were set aside for hunting and recreation exclusively for landowners in this area! Great fishing abounds including boating in the nearby Mountain Home Reservoir and Smith Reservoir. In winter, skiing is available in the mountains.
There is also light industry and general commerce in the region, but all heavy industry is over the mountains to the east and downwind of the Ranches, leaving the area protected so that the air remains dry, clean, and pure.
This ranch is 12 miles east of Fort Garland, 33 miles east of Alamosa (Walmart), and 50 miles west of Walsenburg with easy access to Hwy 160. Fort Garland is the site of the last command of Kit Carson and is now a state historical monument and museum. Denver is 210 miles to the north, while Albuquerque, New Mexico is 223 miles to the south. San Luis, the Costilla County east seat, is 23 miles southwest of the land.
The Ranches rise to meet the spectacular mountains of the Forbes Trinchera Ranch on the eastern boundary of the Ranches. Ranch elevation runs from 7,880 feet to 12,000 feet above sea level. The majesty of Trinchera Peak and Blanca Peak (13,546 feet and 14,363 feet) in the Sangre de Cristo Range overshadows the area.
