Central City is located in the Rocky Mountains, only 35 miles west of Denver. With the Central City Parkway, visitors can reach Central City 12 minutes after exiting off of I-70 at exit 243. An easy, incredibly scenic drive to an historic destination.

Gilpin County is a rural community in Colorado’s high country, neighboring the Continental Divide, yet less than an hour west of downtown Denver. Residents enjoy a quality of life enhanced by the vast recreational opportunities offered by Golden Gate State Park, the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests, the limited-stakes gaming in Black Hawk and Central City, a state-of-the-art recreation center and fairgrounds, low taxes and financially secure local government.
Gilpin County is 54% public lands with most of that being U.S. Forest Service lands in the Arapaho & Roosevelt National Forest where recreation opportunities abound. Golden Gate Canyon State Park is also a wonderful resource that was established in 1960 and has 36 miles of hiking trails across its 12,000 acres.
Living in Gilpin County means co-existing with abundant wildlife. In the past ten years our moose population has surged making sightings commonplace and causing residents to exercise caution around them. The herds of Elk are quite a sight in addition to deer, coyote, foxes and bobcats. Many residents never actually see a mountain lion but rest assured that the cougars see us!
Things to do in Center City
There are numerous summer and winter sports and outdoor activities to be enjoyed in and around Gilpin County. Central City has an excellent museum, the Gilpin History Museum, located on East1st High Street directly above Johnny Z's Casino. The oldest operating Opera House in the United States opened in Central City in 1878 and is located 1/2 block north of the Teller House. The Teller House is home of the famous “Face on the Barroom Floor.
In June the yellow Harrison roses, reputedly/ originally brought over from Cornwall, England, brighten the hillsides and yards. Ancestors of the wild hop vines can be seen in the fall. These were utilized not only to brew beer, but also to make yeast for bread making. Rhubarb grows wild around the mine tailings and there are lilac bushes in most yards. Wild flowers are at their peak during the month of August. Aspen leaves usually start to turn around Labor Day, covering the mountains in magnificent colors in September and October. The majestic Colorado Blue Spruce can be seen throughout the hillsides all year round.
